Daily Prompt: The Artist And The Archaeologist

Standard

When you were 10, what did you want to be when you grew up? What are you now? Are the two connected?

At that age all I wanted to be was an artist. The walls of my bedroom were covered with cartoons, Snoopy and Charlie Brown being my favorite. Construction paper and masking tape were my friends, along with pencil crayons and cardboard.

The other thing I wanted to be was an archaeologist digging for lost treasure, I thought it was the coolest thing ever. When I was around ten or twelve, I buried a small box of trinkets so I could have the fun of digging it up. This part of the quest I found rather boring, because I already knew where the treasure lay. I also buried a dead mouse, but never did find the bones, that was very disappointing.

I have been an artist my whole life, and have dabbled in many different mediums. I don’t make my living at it, but it will always be a passion in my life.

I didn’t become an archaeologist, but also remain interested in anything to do with this field of study. The very mention of the word Egyptology, and I’m still conjuring up treasure digs in my head.

For me, these two passions will always be connected, they have defined who I am; who knows, maybe one of these years I may be lucky enough to develop an ancient curse of my own, 🙂

Daily Prompt: Never Be Too Serious

Standard

Tell us about a thing you’ll never write about.

Hmm… I would never write about my greatest fear……that would just be asking the Gods to rain down on me. 🙂

As far as photos go, this is the silliest thing I could come up with, I don’t feel like being serious today. I snapped this shot one morning while walking Molly.

Daily Prompt: Tourist Trap

Standard

What’s your dream tourist destination — either a place you’ve been and loved, or a place you’d love to visit? What about it speaks to you?

A vacation this early in the morning? I travel light, so let’s get moving. :0)

My dream vacation would have to be, for my husband and I to take a trip on the Orient Express, sadly, the original no longer runs. On 14 December 2009, the Orient Express ceased to operate and the route disappeared from European railway timetables. The Venice-Simplon Orient Express, now runs in its place, Perhaps we will have to be satisfied with that, lol, oh dam, from one luxury to another.

Anyway……….

I’ve wanted to ever since I was a kid. I love trains, and this one in particular seemed to speak of opulence and intrigue… perhaps I’ve read one too many Agatha Christie novels/movies.

Or James Bond riding the train rescuing a beautiful double agent. All this aside, I really would have loved to ride the legendary beauty. It would have been a trip of a life time I’m sure, so many reasons.

We will now be riding aboard the Venice-Simplon Orient Express, an adventure worth taking, I have no doubt.

One day we will travel with this new Queen and discover adventures of our own.

Daily Prompt: The Zone

Standard

Tell us about your favorite way to get lost in a simple activity — running, chopping vegetables, folding laundry, whatever. What’s it like when you’re in “the zone”?

For me it can be a number of things, because that’s just the way my mind rolls. These days, I have been loosing myself in my “little room”, it’s our second bedroom I have turned into my art/sewing room. My refuge where I can hunker down and be a happy hermit. I’d show you a photo, but to be honest, I’m afraid someone would call the “Got Junk” people, who would try to rescue me from the disorganized mess, lol.

I’ve often fantasized about the perfect art/craft room, all the storage space I could have, and each one bulging, exactly like it is now. Nothing has fallen on my head lately, and I’ve only stubbed my toe on occasion, so that’s pretty minor.

Molly, our little Westie has not become lost in the maze of fabric, she has her own special mound to sleep on.

I do make attempts to keep it sorted and organized, but then I get a fantastic idea in my head, rummaging through my treasures once again, and more than likely not putting things back where they should be.

I’ve watched tons of organizational videos on YouTube, quite honestly I find them fascinating, mostly because I love seeing the passion a person has for what they truly love to do. And on occasion I really do pick out a tip or two I can actually use.

“Bean” the cat, sits on a storage unit at window level, making sure everything has an equal amount of hair on it. I know customers love a little extra sometimes.

I play movies on my portable DVD player, watch Bean enjoy the sun, and sew to my heart’s content.

These days I have been working on hats for my Etsy shop. I love creating from scratch, and through much trial and error I eventually get some that I am pleased with.

Annie, my favorite assistant, is happy to help out, and she always loves what I make. 🙂

Happy trails to the rest of you out there, who are able to reach “the zone”

Daily Prompt: Silver Linings – And What’s Left Over

Standard

Write about something you consider “ugly” — war, violence, failure, hatred — but try to find beauty, or a sense of hope, in your thoughts.

A couple of months ago while I was driving through BC, I passed by the location of the Hope slide. It was a reminder of how quickly our lives can change, and how some people can find a way to make light of what is left over.

Daily Prompt: The Journey- To the Farm And Back

Standard

Tell us about a journey — whether a physical trip you took, or an emotional one.

Well here I am back from the dead…. so it seems. In early March I got news I had to travel home to help look after my mum, who had broken her ankle. My mind was whirring with a million things, from getting my car ready for the long journey, to wondering how my mum is going to make it through this challenging time.

The trip I took was physical and emotional, I enjoyed driving through  B.C and Alberta, and finally reached Saskatchewan.

It’s hard not to look like a geek when taking your own pic.

I stayed overnight in Regina with my sister and her husband. Plenty of activity in their backyard.

Snowmen just seem to love living here.

I was really happy to finally get to Yorkton to see my mom. She was still in the hospital at that point, but she was so happy to see me.

I stayed on the farm for about two weeks, driving in every other day to visit her. I would take my lunch in and we would have a “picnic” at bedside while she ate her hospital food. She insisted that it really did taste quite good, and actually, it didn’t look half bad. We would play cards each day, she always looked forward to doing that.

Back on the farm… I have not seen this much snow since I was a kid.

..and plenty of glorious, prairie sunshine.

My trip back was an interesting one. I stopped to say hi to the giant moose in Moose Jaw,Saskatchewan.

Some things just grow really big here.

I took a different route through Alberta and encountered some interesting sights along the way.

..and no shortage of beautiful mother nature.

My journey was a good one, I love driving down roads I’ve never been. Now that I’m home, it’s just one surprise after another….

Do The Right Thing: Bloggers Unite- Me and Mom

Standard

Today I must do the right thing and thank my mom for all she has done, 54 years ago today she was working very, very hard! 🙂 Thanks mom!

About four weeks ago she fell and cracked a bone in her ankle, she has been in the hospital ever since, quite the ordeal, seeing she is eighty three. She gets the cast off around the beginning of April, and can’t wait to go home. She has never been away from home for such an extended period of time, and I’m sure is finding it difficult to deal with.

I have four siblings, and live the farthest away, it is about a two day drive for me. My oldest brother lives with mum and cares for her, he is a gem. My youngest sister lives about two hours from where mum is in the hospital so can drive to see her on her days off. Last week when Barb was visiting mum she took this snap shot with her phone, the wonders of technology. I have one as well, so I took a pic of myself and little Molly so mum could see us.

IMG_0270

She is being a real trooper, but the whole ordeal must be terribly stressful on her. All of us have been talking to her each day, which is helping I think, but she does miss her home environment very much.

When I was a kid one her favorite programs to watch was the Tom Jones variety show, She loved watching him, lol, I still remember the look on her face when he would do his sexy dancing. 🙂 And yes, she did love the music as well.

At the beginning of April I will be driving out to see her, and stay for a couple of weeks, it will be good to see her.

Thanks for being who you are mom, I love you!
